Learn The Woodworking Tools
Used For Making My Pens

Although each one of my pens is hand crafted, I do have a number of woodworking tools that I use to help me create the perfect pen for you. Without any one of them, your pen wouldn’t look as good or last as long. I need these tools to help me take the wood from a blank block into a finished pen.

Many people have misperceptions about woodworking. Not everyone who works with wood is a carpenter, and most of us when we are getting started are doing it as a kind of hobby rather than a trade.

However, even for people like me who have turned it into a business, there is no doubt that working with wood is a joyful experience.

The tools that I use help me. I’m not sitting around with an old-fashioned chisel and hammer. Instead, I have some very nice power tools that help me make unique pens for you all day long.

Shaping Tools
My pens are made using the wood turning technique, so I have a lot of shaping tools. One of the tools I use most consistently is a lathe. Lathes are an old tool that turns the wood while I shape it, and they have been used since Egyptian times.

Of course, in those days lathes were two-person tools, and one person had to pull a rope constantly to keep them turning. I know my grandsons love me, but they would never turn my lathes all day for me like that!

Thus, I have my own small lathe machine to work on—its one of several PSI woodworking products that I own and I would be lost without it.

Cutting And Drilling Tools
Some of the other tools that I have are cutting and drilling tools. One of my favorites is my 14” band saw. It is a Grizzly product, and I absolutely love it. I can use this to cut down wood blocks, customize pen lengths for you, or as part of the process for making pen boxes.

I also have a drill press that I use. This helps me ensure that the barrels of the pens are smoothly made, so that they turn and work properly for you. This is especially important in pencil making. Using the drill press I have control and can work quickly on your projects.

Pieces Of The Process
Each one of these tools is essential in the process I use for making a pen. They help me be able to create a quality writing instrument for you time and time again. They also help me with some of the fine work that needs to happen to make every detail perfect.

When I started pen turning again after so many years of not doing any kind of woodworking, I’d given most of my equipment away to other members of my family. As I got back into wood turned products, I’ve gotten new things and learned a lot about the market.

Each of the pieces of equipment I’ve brought back into my life is top quality and designed to help me cut, drill, turn, and shape beautiful pens and pencils for you.
