Wood Turning
Traditional Pen Turning Pieces
Wood turning has been used to create beautiful hand crafted wood pieces since Egyptian times. Fortunately, I no longer have to rely on a two-person lathe turned by rope. The tools of the trade have advanced considerably since the early days!
One thing has not changed, however. My hand made pens still shine with the smooth finish that only turned wood has to offer. If you merely cut the wood, the pens never look half as good.
It's the ability of wood turning to really bring wood to life that has made pen turning an enduring art form. Turned wood pens are shaped with the grain of the wood, so that the natural patterns emerge and get polished under the lathes used to make them. They aren't sliced and forced into a shape as with carved wood projects.
Techniques of Natural Beauty
Pen turning relies on the way that the lathes bring out the natural beauty of the wood. It’s built right into the techniques of turning and shaping.
When I was learning how to turn wood for the first time, I was trained in how to handle the blocks so that their inner souls would emerge in the finished pieces.
As a result, my pens are smooth and have a glow that showcases the natural qualities of the wood. I use only the best materials, so that they really have something to show you when I am finished with them. I use a simply selection of tools, but really focus on getting the turning process to do most of the work.
Forget Bic
Thanks to the effort that I put into the creation process, one look at my hand made pens and you can forget about going back to Bic's. There's nothing a plastic pen can offer you that a wooden pen won’t give you in spades. From comfort as you write to lasting for your lifetime and beyond, handcrafted pens really are a step above the competition.
There really is something about holding something in your hand that took time to create. Mass produced goods take seconds to throw together and the indifference of their makers really shows. I'm never indifferent. Each one of my turned wood pens is created with your pleasure in mind.
Share The Beauty
When you buy turned wood pens, you'll quickly attract attention when you use them. They're custom creations in a world of plastic pens, so they really stand out. People will want to know where you got them.
You'll also be able to feel comfortable sharing the beauty of the pens by giving them as gifts. They're practical gifts on one hand, but on the other hand they are high-quality items that are a pleasure to behold.
The wood turning I do ensures that they'll be free of imperfections or defects, and that they'll be able to be enjoyed by the person you give them to for years to come.
