Welcome to my site about hand turned pen making. I started this hobby earlier this year and have been having a lot of fun making these for family and friends.

It may sound strange, but I was spending too much time on my computer and not moving around or being out in the sunshine enough that it was causing some health problems.

Then my doctor said, "GET A HOBBY!"

A Hobby To Live For

I enjoyed woodworking when I was younger, and built many things. When I started researching for a new hobby, I found that in the early 90's, a relatively new concept in woodworking had evolved: "turning pens" from a variety of different wood types and other materials. I loved the beautiful and unique pens one can craft, and decided hand turned pen making was an exciting opportunity for me. I could adapt the process so I could do it in a rolling office chair, since I have trouble standing for very long.

I don't do anything half-way (as my wife would attest), so I got the type of woodworking equipment required and jumped head over heels into my new hobby of hand turned pen making!

There was a lot of trial and error at first, but I got better and better at hand turned pen making. It was exciting to discover that, starting with just a chunk of wood, I could design something so beautiful. (Visit the Pen Gallery to see a few of my creations.)

My daughter-in-law took some pictures of my pens and pencils and sent them back to me labeled "Papa's Pens" (my two grandsons call me "Papa"). That gave me the idea for this website.

Everywhere I went, people saw my pens they wanted to buy them, which gave me the notion that I might share my new hobby of hand turned pen making with others via the Internet.

As Rome was not built in a day, neither will be this website. It will grow every week. New handmade pens and pencils will be added. If a particular pen or pencil has sold and you want one made in the same wood and style we can do that through our special orders page.
